awareness for Queer violence in the late 19th century
Media and law enforcement, Harmful or helpful?
Our goal is to raise Awareness for queer violence and how the media Perceives it
Throughout the last century the media and law enforcement has spun several different narratives on violence against the queer community, and on the violence committed by the queer community. Some narratives helpful and bringing much needed attention to such topics, and other narratives perpetuating prejudice and stereotypes. Our main aim for this website is to make major organizations, such as Human Rights Watch or Amnesty International, to take action and make more noise surrounding violence against the queer community, and more importantly to take action against this violence through legal routes, via laws, acts, and much more.
how will we raise awareness?
Our main series of events we will be following to raise awareness are the bag murders and the Last Call killer, both took place between 1970 and 2000 in the NYC queer bar scene, and both had different reactions from the public across media portrayal, reporting, and law enforcement neglect. Our hope is that by educating those in places able to create change about this tragedies will help create a new wave of activism and justice for not only those we have lost to violence against the queer community, but also for those who will be hurt if there is not change.
